What Motivates Us

Prior to the Civil Rights Movement, African American firefighters in San Diego were only allowed to operate out of our current location, also known as “Old” Fire Station No. 19. These men were given the most difficult tasks, given very little opportunity to advance, and experienced excessive discrimination from citizens of the city and from fellow firefighters.

The Historical Fire Station 19 Foundation was created in 2009 with the purpose of raising funds to restore the building’s historic architecture, educate the public about the history of segregation and integration within San Diego’s emergency services departments, and to serve the community through its partnership with Brother’s United, San Diego Firefighters, Inc.
